Kuro, meaning "black" in Japanese.
Creating Kuro was a study in balance, simplicity, and the harmony of materials—a true reflection of Japanese design philosophy. The goal was to craft a piece that felt light yet grounded, refined yet warm. The wood finish uses the Shou sugi ban technique, a traditional Japanese method of charring teak to enhance its texture, durability, and rich, dark beauty, while the inset woven cane seat introduces organic texture and tactile contrast, creating a sense of breathability. The cross-shaped cutouts in the legs were inspired by shurikens—the iconic shooting stars used by ninjas—infusing the piece with a subtle nod to Japanese martial artistry, adding a subtle architectural detail without disrupting the bench's clean lines. Horizontal wood rod beams were carefully integrated for both structural stability and a modern touch, uniting form and function in a way that speaks to timeless craftsmanship.
